french open fever

I’ve neither the patience nor the capacity to write a blow-by-blow analysis of the match, but I do have the energy to say this: My mom, future-sis-in-law (naks!!! Go kuya!) and I were sitting at the edge of the bed (doon kami kasya) and shrieking at every break point. We held our breaths in the loooong rallies and jumped out of our seats when the point was won. We let our overly-opinionated and know-it-all selves give critiques of what each player was doing wrong—perfectly aware that actual execution is much harder than it seems—simply because we couldn’t keep our emotions from pouring out. We loudly shared our “WHOAS!!!” at Federer’s amazing placements and Nadal’s shocking volley points. We gripped our sheets as Rafa sprinted from baseline to net (and to every corner of his side of the court!), and as Roger delivered his powerful ace shots that just left Nadal staring into space.

Cut the long story short: It was a breathtaking, sweat-breaking, heart-racing match, and regardless of who I rooted for, it showed me a fabulous time.

vamos, rafa!!!

allez, roger!!

Post-match was also great for me, because I was able to access the interviews with these fantastic players. And though Rafa won this match, my utter respect goes to both of them. Because it’s not about who won today, but about what you are as an athlete. And they are BOTH commendable athletes for their skills, discipline, attitude and passion.

Here are some excerpts from the interviews, which just made my respect for them triple in intensity:

Roger's never-say-die attitude

  1. my rafa won! thats three in a row! three more and he'll tie borg's record. grabe, tama ka, kaloka yung match. sana napanood mo yung first set. rafita (oh yeah, yan ang tawag sa kanya ng mga compatriots nya) saved, like, 10 breakpoints! crucial yun e. kung na-convert lang ni roger isa dun, baka mas gumanda yung laban. hehehe. oh well, better luck next year! :)

  2. hi ina! was also cheering for rafa, although almost everyone else in the house (and there were significantly more of them) was cheering for roger. oh well, they're both great athletes, but it's like the french open just BELONGS to rafa, doesn't it?

  3. tasha - would have to agree that it could've been a tighter match. pero ok na din yon. baka ma-heart attack na tayo kung mas-close pa!

ceres - yup, i think his determination this year just went up a notch and it's like he wasn't gonna let anybody get in his way!! he was playing so strong from the start. and he just got past his teenage years, which means he's just gonna get stronger! yikes! i wonder how BIG his biceps can actually grow?!?

(joy and grace, if you guys are reading this.. PEACE!)

regarding rafa's biceps, take a look at this super funny pic: http://www.atptennis.com/en/players/gallery/?Event=revue

ceres, maybe his thighs and biceps are in a competition to see which one can grow bigger! pero as far as i see now parang nananalo si biceps! lagi kasing naka-3/4 pants!
